Accounting Degree
This site provides information on earning an accounting degree and pursuing
a career in accounting. Information provided includes a directory of schools
offering accounting degrees, along with forms to request additional information.
If you are interested in an accounting degree, you can realize your earning
potential by taking advantage of online accounting courses, or even standard
on-campus courses, offered by established accredited schools. You'll learn to
deal with one of the most important aspects of a company: it's revenue.
Nature of Work in Accounting:
Accountants find jobs in public accounting, management accounting (also known
as industrial accounting, corporate accounting, or private accounting), government
accounting, government auditing, or internal auditing. Accounting work includes
financial record keeping, book keeping, closing the books, financial reporting,
and all aspects of keeping a group’s accounting records in order. Accountants
might fill many other functions as well, such as budget analysis, business model
analysis, investment planning, and more.
Why Pursue an Accounting Degree ?
Accounting is one of the fastest growing professions and the role of the accounting
discipline has changed dramatically in the past decade. For many years its primary
responsibility was to generate financial information for external purposes.
Today, in an age of new technology, accountants participate in planning, coordinating,
and controlling the economic activity of business and non-business enterprises,
and in auditing the management and financial reports of these enterprises. They
have been asked to expand their services to encompass a broader range of information,
including nonfinancial measures. The field of accounting therefore offers outstanding
students one of the most challenging career opportunities available today. The
rewards are ample both in one's professional growth and in financial remuneration.
Current starting salaries for accountants are excellent when compared to most
other business fields.
Accounting Degree Curriculum:
The Accounting program includes instruction in the following:
- Principles of accounting
- Cost accounting
- Financial statements
- Payroll accounting
- Finance
- Marketing
- Business Law
- Corporate accounting
- Tax accounting
Accounting degree schools typically train students in the fundamentals of business
economics, auditing, ERP systems, general ledger and accounting systems, bookkeeping,
and more. While getting your accounting degree you will also develop substantial
computer skills and the ability to work with spreadsheets, database and financial
analysis packages.
Accounting Skills: Accounting requires people who can work with complex business
structures, computer systems, and financial analysis packages, since much critical
accounting information is stored and processed in these types of systems. Accounting
work further requires an aptitude for mathematics and the ability to compare
and analyze accounting data quickly. Accountants also need to have strong communication
skills as they must effectively communicate accounting data to their employers
and/or clients. The accounting profession also demands a high level of integrity
because the financial data prepared by accountants is used by business managers
to run their business, and, in public companies, such accounting data is used
by potential investors to decide whether or not to invest in the business.
Accounts and Auditors (CPA)
Accountants and auditors and (CPA's) Certified Public Accounts, help to ensure
that the Nation's firms are run more efficiently, its public records kept more
accurately, and its taxes paid properly and on time. They perform these vital
accounting functions by offering an increasingly wide array of business and
accounting services to their clients. These services include public accounts,
management accountants, and government accounting, as well as internal auditing.
However, accountants and auditors are broadening the services as they now offer
to include budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology
consulting, and limited legal services.
Beyond the fundamental tasks of the accounting occupation preparing, analyzing,
and verifying financial documents in order to provide information to clients,
many accountants now are required to possess a wide range of knowledge and skills.
Employment in Accounting:
Most accounting professionals work in private industry or in government. The
next largest segment is that of accounting firms, where about 25% of accountants
find employment. About 12% of all accountants offer accounting services on a
freelance basis
